Capital Steel Industries has researched the best insulation packages in the steel building industry. NAIMA (the North American Insulation Manufacturers Association) has certified some building insulations specifically for steel and metal building applications.
The NAIMA 202-96® certified metal building insulations are fiber glass insulations specifically designed for steel and metal building applications. This particular standard by NAIMA assures that these special insulations are separate and distinct from materials for other applications.
Not all fiber glass insulations are designed for steel buildings. Steel building insulation has some unique properties. Some other insulation packages are not up to the same integrity and thermal performance standards required when utilized in a steel structure.
As a whole certified steel building insulation must have optimal thickness recovery after compression and added tensile strength. The insulation is compressed and tightly wound in rolls for storage or shipment after a vapor retarder facing is applied to the blanket. A particular manufacturing process is necessary to give the insulation the structural integrity required to recover thickness and tolerate shipping and installation issues.
NAHB (the National Association of Home Builders) does quality control inspections at NAIMA plants unannounced. During these inspections random samplings of insulation are taken. ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) testing is done for thermal resistance and thickness. The weight, width, length, and thickness and thermal conductivity of each product is determined. Certification only takes place if the NAIMA 202-96® standard is met. UL conducts other test for fire hazard classification, emission of odors, and corrosiveness indicators.
You will find NAIMA imprints on the surface of steel building improved insulation with “NAIMA 202-96 (Rev.2000)” on the surface of the insulation opposite the facing.
Independent laminators sell certified steel building insulation nationwide.
